I am an English Lit grad, currently working in book publishing. Over the past 15 years, I have been writing down quotes I come across — mostly from books, movies, and music. Now I am in the process of putting these quotes up on this blog in the hopes that they will be easier for me to find and cross-reference in the future — and so others can enjoy them.

There are no unsacred places;
there are only sacred places
and desecrated places.
Accept what comes from silence.
Make the best you can of it.
Of the little words that come
out of the silence, like prayers
prayed back to the one who prays,
make a poem that does not disturb
the silence from which it came.

— Wendell Berry, “How to be a Poet” from Given

  1. Lovely! I’m an English Lit grad too and I also work in publishing. I never thought to do this with the quotes I collected over the years, though. Thanks for this!
